  • How to Throw a Football Like an NFL Star

    September 28, 2023 2 min read

As the NFL 2023 season kicks off with a bang, millions of fans around the world will be glued to their screens. Quarterbacks, in particular, are the stars of the show, launching footballs with precision and power that seems almost superhuman. Names like Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rodgers have become synonymous with quarterback excellence.

But have you ever wondered what it takes to throw a football like these NFL stars? Well, you're in luck because in this blog post, we're going to break down the fundamentals of throwing a football like an NFL quarterback.

    1. Grip

A proper grip is the foundation of a great throw. Start by gripping the football with your throwing hand, ensuring your fingers are spread evenly across the laces. Your thumb should rest underneath the ball, opposite your fingers. This grip allows for control and accuracy.

    2. Stance

Your stance is crucial for generating power and accuracy. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, your non-throwing shoulder facing your target. Bend your knees slightly to create a stable base. Your weight should be evenly distributed between both feet, with most of it on your back leg.

    3. The Wind-Up

Before you release the ball, you need to generate power. To do this, bring the football back toward your ear while keeping your elbow at a 90-degree angle. This motion is often referred to as the wind-up. Remember to keep the football close to your body during this phase.

    4. Release

The release is where the magic happens. As you begin to bring the ball forward, your non-throwing shoulder should open up, pointing toward your target. Simultaneously, your throwing arm should extend fully, releasing the ball with a flick of the wrist. The release should be smooth and fluid, with the energy transferred from your legs and core to your arm.

    5. Follow-Through

A proper follow-through is essential for accuracy. After releasing the ball, your throwing arm should continue its motion, with your hand finishing high and pointing toward your target. Your weight should shift from your back foot to your front foot as you follow through, helping to maintain balance and accuracy.

Now that you understand the mechanics of a perfect throw, it's time to hit the field and practice. Remember that even NFL stars like Mahomes and Brady started with the basics. Regular practice, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn from your mistakes will help you improve your throwing skills over time.
