  • How to Pick a Basketball

    February 22, 2023 3 min read

If you’re looking to buy a basketball, you’ve come to the right place. Choosing the right ball is a major decision, as the right ball can help you perform better and practice more effectively.

Here are some tips to help you pick the perfect basketball for your needs.

    Size

Basketballs come in three sizes: officialintermediate, and youth.

The official basketball size is 29.5 inches in circumference. This size is great for professional and collegiate basketball games, in high school and junior high basketball games for both boys and girls.

The intermediate basketball size is typically 28.5 inches in circumference, which is slightly smaller than the official size. It is often used for players who are transitioning from a smaller youth-sized ball to the official-sized ball. Intermediate size basketballs are also used in women's basketball games at the high school and collegiate levels.

    The youth basketball size
can vary depending on the age of the players, but the most common size for young children is a basketball with a circumference of 27.5 inches. This size is recommended for children ages 5 to 8.
For children between the ages of 9 and 11, an intermediate basketball might be used.

It's important to note that these sizes may vary depending on the league or organization's rules and regulations, so it's always a good idea to check before purchasing a basketball for a specific purpose.

    Weight

Basketballs come in different weights, too, so you should select one that suits your playing style.

Lighter balls are easier to control and maneuver, while heavier balls give you more power and accuracy.

    Grip

The grip of the ball is important, as it will determine how well you can handle the ball. Look for a ball with a textured surface that will give you a good grip even when your hands are sweaty.

    Type: Indoor vs Outdoor

Next, think about the type of ball you’ll need.
Indoor basketballs are designed to be used on a smooth court.

This can include practices, games, and tournaments, that take place in a gym with a smooth, hardwood or synthetic court surface.

It's important to note that indoor basketballs are typically made of materials that may become damaged if used on outdoor courts, as the rough surfaces can scuff and scratch the ball.

For outdoor play, we recommend to use a basketball with a durable cover and reinforced construction.

    Outdoor basketballs
are designed to be used on rough, asphalt surfaces.

They are designed to be more durable than indoor basketballs, with a tougher cover and reinforced construction that can survive the wear and tear of playing on rough outdoor surfaces.

So, they are typically used in driveways, parks, playgrounds, and other outdoor basketball courts.

It's important to note that using an outdoor basketball on an indoor court can cause damage to the surface and the ball itself. The rough surface of an outdoor basketball can scratch and scuff an indoor court.

So, we recommend to use the appropriate basketball for the specific playing surface.

    Quality

Finally, consider the quality of the ball you’re looking at.

Basketballs come in a variety of materials, from microfiber to composite and rubber. The higher the quality of the material, the more durable the ball will be. While cheaper balls may be tempting, it’s important to remember that you get what you pay for.

Don't be afraid to splurge if you plan on playing often as higher-end balls tend to be more durable and last longer.

By taking the time to consider these factors, you’ll be sure to find the perfect ball for your needs.
